Story behind the design…
Sourced in La Paz, Bolivia, 2006 —
This city was beautiful, but so intense. The staff at my hotel warned me not to go out at night… I wandered anyway, and after an hour of searching for materials to make jewelry, I was led to a maze of caves.
As I walked through long, dim corridors carved into the earth, I was surrounded by Ekeko dolls made of burlap and colorful textiles—figures from Andean tradition carried as symbols of abundance and wishes. I realized I was a rare tourist to enter this locals-only market. Stall after stall, every head turned to stare.
It is such a thrill to finally share these beloved treasures with you. I bought every gorgeous strand of these waxy black Bolivian seed beads. They carry the mystery of La Paz, and the imprint of an unforgettable moment.
Detailed with turquoise-dyed bone, brass, and tiny crystals.
